Conducted in Eldorado Park, Klipspruit, Kliptown and Slovo Park

Khanya College conducted a Household Health Survey in Eldorado Park, Klipspruit, Kliptown and Slovo Park from 24 March to 1 April 2026. The aim of the survey was to understand the healthcare and socio-economic conditions of citizens in those communities. The survey focused on identifying the most pressing issues, how people are surviving, the health problems they experience at public healthcare facilities, and their overall quality of life at home and in their communities.

The survey process began on 9 February 2026, when Khanya staff started mapping the entire Eldorado Park area which happened over 3 weeks. They counted all housing forms, including bond houses, informal settlements, backyard dwellings, council houses and flats. This process was important to understand how many households and what types of houses were in the areas so that a proper plan for the survey could be developed.

On 19 and 23 March 2026, the survey team gathered at PUSH, Eldorado Park Extension 7, for survey training. They were trained on how to conduct the survey, how to treat people respectfully, and how to ask questions clearly to ensure accurate responses.

For safety and security, the CPF (Community Policing Forum) was called in, and they also had their own planning session, mapping out how they would support the process.

On 24 March, the survey officially began. This marked the beginning of an important journey for the community of Eldorado Park and Khanya College. For the duration of the survey, the team met every day at PUSH Extension 7 to plan the day’s work, and at the end of each day, they returned for a debriefing session. During the debriefing sessions, challenges were raised and solutions were discussed. Most of the challenges were about safety, since the area is prone to gangsterism and gun violence, as well as language issues. These conditions also caused delays in the survey. For example, in Klipspruit Extension 1, fieldworkers went in to do the survey, but soon after, gunshots were heard, which resulted in the team being pulled out before they could begin their work there.

In informal settlements, we found that people live in dire poverty. People were more open about their struggles, their HIV status and other illnesses they have. They highlighted the urgent need for proper housing, proper sanitation and running water. We also found that the majority of people rely on social grants, and that food does not last the whole month in their homes, leading them to rely on family, friends and neighbours to survive for the rest of the month.

In middle-class communities, we found that people are not comfortable disclosing their HIV and health status. They do not really attend public clinics, so there was not much to share about their experiences. They mostly attend private healthcare and are not really affected by the challenges in public healthcare.

Overall, both communities were united in wanting gangsterism and gun violence to stop in their communities. Over the eight days, the team worked towards the goal of hearing the voices of the people in Eldorado Park. The survey was successfully completed on 1 April 2026 after walking through all the streets in Eldorado Park.

The team then proceeded to count all the questionnaires received. After the Easter holidays, the questionnaires will be captured, a report will be produced, and community meetings will be held to share the findings.
